Modernism and Western cultural influences precipitated Japan's rapid transformation into an industrial empire in the 1920s and 30s, a movement reflected in the tiny advertising space of matchboxes, whose art reflected the new graphic style. This book is a miniature gallery of 42 superb examples, vividly reproduced one to a page and bound in the orihon or accordion style. Although most advertising labels were anonymously designed, these miniscule remainders of a society that was soon to be at war with the world show the influence of cubism and the Bauhaus in their bold illustrations and English type, yet retain conventional woodblock fonts and right-to-left.
