Rereading events, objects and thoughts that have given life to, formed and developed a process of production, design and culture such as Cassina's means reflecting on the weight and value of a series of passages through which a specific excellence in "thinking" and "producing" the design of furniture in Italy. With regard to the general value of this great experience, built up over 80 years, we have in this book sought to tackle the reconstruction of this process by lining up that series of "meetings" between company and designers that have provided the opportunities for the "visions" that have profoundly marked the development of Cassina and of international design.

This heritage of research and experience within today's Cassina nourishes the new creative and productive horizons brought into play by new and future industrial and commercial challenges. The catalogue-cum-book edited by the design historian, Giampiero Bosoni, brings together, in about 350 pages and 450 images, the history of the most famous industry of Italian furniture, Cassina, which for decades has represented one of the most lively and brilliant expressions of Italian design at an international level.

A comprehensive introductory section gathers together the contributions of authoritative international scholars, including Arturo Carlo Quintavalle, Filippo Alison, Penny Sparke, Bernhard E. Bürdek, Clino Trini Castelli, Barbara Lehmann, Aldo Bonomi, Omar Calabrese, Marco Meneguzzo and Andrea Branzi. These are joined by a series of interviews prepared specially for the occasion and undertaken by the book's editor with Philippe Starck, Gaetano Pesce, Paolo Deganello, Piero Lissoni, Andrea Branzi, Afra and Tobia Scarpa and Mario Bellini. The central and most substantial part of the book comprises a section dedicated to the most important designers of international fame who have most influenced the historic development of Cassina including, amongst others, Gio Ponti, Vico Magistretti, Gaetano Pesce, Archizoom, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Paolo Deganello, Andrea Branzi and Philippe Starck, to which may be added, thanks to the prestigious "Cassina I Maestri" collection, the fundamental designs of Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Franco Albini and Charlotte Perriand. In the broad-ranging sections devoted to the various designers and "visions" they brought to Cassina, there are also presentations, sometimes accompanied by hitherto unpublished photographs, of some of the most renowned products in the history of Italian and international design.
