In South Africa dolls are part of a tribe's cultural heritage. They are objects that are laden with associations and the ritual and religious beliefs of a community. African dolls are seen as mediators between the natural and the supernatural; they were created in a great variety of materials and used for ritual, spiritual and healing purposes.

All dolls of this collection come from a Zulu household in Msinga, a tribal region in the former province of Natal, today KwaZulu-Natal, on the eastern coast of South Africa. Made by women of the tribe between 1987 and 1994, they document the end of an agrarian-oriented population and the development towards a modern industrial society in South Africa. In numerous interviews with the women of this tribe, the author Frank Jolles captured the meaning and the content of this collection, which has been passed on over many generations from mothers to daughters.

An impressive collection of 109 African dolls from the second half of the twentieth century. The author describes in detail the ritual, spiritual and healing importance of every object.

Die Puppe gehört im südlichen Afrika zum Kulturgut eines Stammes. Sie ist kein Spielzeug, sondern ein Objekt, das mit rituellen, sozialen und religiösen Inhalten einer Gemeinschaft beladen ist. Auch für heilende Zwecke werden Puppen manchmal eingesetzt. Zu ihrer Herstellung werden die unterschiedlichsten Materialien verwendet.

Die Puppen dieser Sammlung stellen etwas Neuartiges dar: Sie basieren zwar auf traditionellen Prototypen, waren aber zum Verkauf bestimmt. Sie stammen aus einem Zulu-Haushalt in Msinga, einem Stammesgebiet in der früheren Provinz KwaZulu-Natal, an der Ostküste Südafrikas. Sie wurden dort von einer Gruppe von Frauen angefertigt. Bis auf wenige ältere Objekte entstanden sie in den Jahren zwischen 1987 und 1994. Der Autor Frank Jolles hat in vielen Gesprächen mit den Frauen des Stammes die Bedeutung und die Inhalte dieser Sammlung im Einzelnen festgehalten.

Der Katalog zeigt eine beeindruckende Sammlung von 109 afrikanischen Puppen aus der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, deren Funktion und Bedeutung in einführenden Texten ausführlich erläutert wird.
