In 1979, only months before the Soviet invasion of the country, an ancient tomb in Afghanistan was discovered to contain hundreds of artifacts and precious items-among them some 22,000 individual pieces of gold, the so-called Bactrian Horde. To keep them out of looting hands, these priceless items were spirited away from the National Museum of Afghanistan by a small group of museum guards, curators, and antiquities lovers who risked their lives (and in some cases endured torture) to save the country's cultural treasures. These exquisitely crafted objects-jewelry, fittings, statuary, and ceremonial items-are depicted here in large color photographs and detailed descriptions. They illuminate Afghanistan's key place at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia along the Silk Road.
